US Embassy Moscow visasThe US will suspend nonimmigrant visa (NIV) operations in Russia beginning August 23, 2017, due to the personnel cap Russia imposed on US operations. Visa operations will resume on a greatly reduced scale. Beginning September 1, 2017, the US will conduct nonimmigrant visa (NIV) interviews only at the US Embassy Moscow. The US has suspended NIV interviews at US Consulates in St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, and Vladivostok until further notice. more »

On April 29, 2014, the US Embassy Caracas (Venezuela) announced that they have resumed limited issuance of B-2 tourist visas for first-time B-2 applicants. This announcement came a month after US consular officials abruptly suspended issuance of B-2 tourist visas. The US Embassy Caracas reports that they remain understaffed, but that the arrival of additional consular officials along with the expectation of more reinforcements for the Embassy has allowed them to open a limited number of appointments for B-2 tourist visas. Playa El Tirano Venezuela 152988847The US Embassy Caracas (Venezuela) issued a notice March 24, 2014, stating that as a result of the expulsion of several US consular officials along with Venezuelan government delays in issuing visas for incoming officers, the US Embassy Caracas does not have sufficient consular staff at present to continue to schedule appointments for first-time tourist (B-1 and B-2) visa applicants. Until further notice, the US Embassy Caracas can offer such appointments only in emergency situations. more »

Some countries provide legal protections to LGBT individuals. But, others do not, and a significant number even criminalize consensual same-sex sexual relations. Individuals convicted in these countries could be sentenced to prison, and/or be punished by fines, deportation, flogging, or even sentenced to death. Before choosing an international destination, LGBT travelers should carefully consider the laws and biases of their international destination and decide how open one can be regarding one’s sexual orientation or gender identity.
