Japan Visa Extension: Earthquake

Temple Garden, Kyoto, Honshu, Japan 200366242-001On March 11, 2011, USCIS issued a notice for Japanese and other Pacific region nationals stranded in the US due to the recent earthquakes and tsunami permitting a visa extension in certain situations. Those who have exceeded or are about to exceed their authorized stay in the US may be permitted up to an additional 30 days to depart from the US. To obtain such additional authorized stay, see instructions below.

Visitors traveling under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP):

  • If at an airport, contact US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) office at that airport.
  • All others please visit a local USCIS office.

Visitors traveling under a nonimmigrant visa:

  • Visit a local USCIS office.
  • Bring passport, evidence that they are stranded (i.e., itinerary for canceled flight), I-94 departure record.
